An older woman and her preacher were sitting on an airplane together when the captain came over the intercom and warned of turbulence and possible trouble in the cockpit. The woman looked at her preacher and said, “Oh no! I’m so scared! I knew I shouldn’t have gotten on this airplane!” Her preacher said, “Oh, don’t worry, God is with us always. Just pray, He’ll protect us.” The woman looked at him and said, “I don’t know what Bible you’re reading, but my Bible says, ‘And lo I am with you, always!'”
I’ve heard this joke all of my life. The play on the word lo/low referring to the fact that she was sure God wouldn’t be with her on that airplane, after all, it was in the air, it surely was not lo/low. I can relate to the woman’s fears. I don’t necessarily relate when flying, but I relate in my life right now.
As we venture into the world of homeschooling, I am scared. Will I do what it takes to really give D the education he needs? Will I be able to keep up with his needs, but also giving the needs of the girls and Samoo the attention they deserve? What if we have a day full of appointments and we don’t get enough schooling in? What if we fall short somewhere and he doesn’t do as well as I would expect, but I just can’t get the concept through to him in a way he can understand?
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
Matthew 28:20 (KJV)
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear,
but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)
These are two verses that stand with me when I experience fear. Both of these, my mom taught me at an early age and I am teaching my children. With God, there is no reason to be afraid, He is with us always, He has taken away our spirit of fear if we are willing to give it to Him.
Oh, and just because I love VeggieTales and I think everyone needs to see a VeggieTales video occasionally, here is one about God taking care of us when we are scared. 🙂
